Welcome to the Total Tuning FAQ!

1. Which service is right for me?

Book TotalTalk if you want expert advice before purchasing parts, booking a tune, or making changes to your system.

Book Total Rescue if your system is under-performing, a previous tune missed the mark, or you are not sure whether your setup is ready for a full tune.

Book Basic Setup if your system is installed but still needs help with routing, crossovers, gains, or general DSP foundation before calibration.

Book a Full Remote Tune if your system is fully installed, working correctly, and ready for final calibration.

Add Total Image if your full tune is already completed and you want sharper center image, stronger stage focus, and more advanced refinement.

Ask about Total Care if you want extended support after your tune.

2. What is Total Rescue?

Total Rescue is Total Tuning’s remote diagnostic and recovery service.

It is designed for systems that are not tune-ready, systems that were previously tuned poorly, or systems with issues like weak imaging, strange tonality, routing mistakes, crossover problems, or unclear next steps.

If you are not sure whether you need a Basic Setup, a full tune, or hardware corrections, Total Rescue is the right place to start.

3. Do I need a JL Max?

Not always.

If you already own a JL Max, you can book a no-rental-needed service.

If you do not own one, Total Tuning can provide the required measurement package for qualifying tunes.

International clients should request approval before booking.

4. Do I need two computers?

No.

In most cases, you only need one compatible Windows laptop on your end.

If a second screen is needed for your session, Total Tuning will send it as part of the tuning package with setup instructions. If you are using a JL dsp, Mac or windows laptops are acceptable.

5. What kind of computer do I need?

You need a traditional Windows laptop that can reliably run your DSP software and remote access software.

You should also have:

  • stable internet
  • a dependable power source
  • direct USB access when required
  • Signal into my DSP (optical or RCA)

6. Can you tune my system if it is not fully ready yet?

Not as a full tune.

A full remote tune is for systems that are fully installed, operational, and free of wiring or equipment problems.

If your system still needs foundational setup work or diagnosis, start with Basic Setup or Total Rescue first.

7. What should be done before tune day?

Before your appointment, your system should be:

  • fully installed
  • playing through the correct channels
  • free of obvious equipment or wiring issues
  • labelled clearly in the DSP if possible
  • ready with a usable input source for tuning (Optical or RCA)

If you are unsure, book Basic Setup or Total Rescue first.

8. What if I need help with routing, crossovers, gains, or software before the tune?

That is exactly what Basic Setup is for.

Basic Setup is the best choice when the system works, but the foundation still needs to be sorted out before a full calibration session.

9. Can you work with shop-installed systems or customer-owned Maxes?

Yes.

Total Tuning regularly works with customer-owned JL Max systems and with shop-installed vehicles where the installation is complete and calibration is the missing piece.

10. Do you tune boats or marine systems?

Yes.

Marine and boat tuning is available for qualifying setups. If you are unsure whether your system is a fit, start with a consultation or Total Rescue.

11. Can you tune a factory source unit or OEM-based system?

Often, yes.

A direct input solution is usually preferred for best results, but many factory-integrated systems can still be tuned successfully depending on the signal path and hardware.

12. How long does a remote tuning session take?

Most standard remote tunes take about 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on system complexity, readiness, and how quickly setup goes.

Add-on services like Total Image can add time to the appointment.

13. What do I need to do during the session?

You may be asked to:

  • place the microphones or second screen as directed
  • switch inputs or tracks
  • confirm that channels are playing correctly
  • give listening feedback

You do not need prior tuning experience. You just need to be able to follow instructions carefully.

14. Can you tune to my preferences?

Yes.

Total Tuning uses a proven calibration process and then refines the result
around your system, your goals, and your listening preferences.

15. Is subwoofer tuning included?

Yes.

Subwoofer level, crossover integration, and time alignment are included as part
of a full tune when a subwoofer is part of the system.

16. What support is included after a full tune?

Full tunes include 30 days of support for minor adjustments and follow-up questions.

Major equipment changes, major rewrites, or new hardware setups are billed separately.

17. What is Total Image?

Total Image is an advanced post-tune refinement service focused on image stability, stage focus, and spatial precision.

It is designed for clients who want the most locked-in result possible after the full tune is already completed.

18. Do you offer extended support after the included support window?

Yes.

Total Care is the extended support option for clients who want continued help after the included post-tune support period.

Check the Total Care page for the current scope and availability.

19. What happens if I change equipment after my tune?

If you change speakers, amplifiers, signal path, DSP hardware, or other major components, a re-tune is usually required.

20. Do you offer international service?

Yes, for approved countries.

International service is handled differently than lower-48 domestic service and may
use a purchase-and-buyback structure rather than the domestic rental rotation model.

International customers should request approval before booking.

21. How does domestic JL Max shipping work?

For approved domestic tunes, Total Tuning coordinates shipment timing around your appointment so the measurement package arrives in time for your session.

Specific timing depends on schedule availability and shipping lane.

22. When do I get my deposit back?

Deposits are returned after the equipment is received, inspected, and confirmed complete and undamaged.

23. What happens if rental equipment is damaged, late, or not returned?

Late, damaged, missing, or un-returned items may reduce or forfeit the deposit and may result in replacement or repair charges.

24. Do you offer in-person tuning?

Yes. Total Tuning offers in-person DSP tuning locally in College Station, Texas. The customer brings the vehicle to Total Tuning for the scheduled appointment.

Select travel work may be available by special arrangement.

25. Can I get a refund if I am not satisfied?

Because tuning is a subjective service, refunds are not offered once the service has been performed.

Reasonable follow-up adjustments are handled within the included support window.

26. Is in-person tuning better than remote tuning?

Not automatically. Total Tuning’s remote process is refined, proven, and used heavily every week. In-person tuning is often better for local customers because it can save money, reduce setup time, avoid shipping logistics, and allow more appointment time for listening or consultation.

27. Why does in-person tuning cost less than a shipped Full Service Tune?

The local in-person tune does not require Total Tuning to ship a MAX™ measurement kit, wait for return shipping, manage rental logistics, or rotate equipment availability. Because the measurement setup is already available in College Station, the service can be priced closer to the no-rental-needed tuning options.

28. Can you travel to me?

Travel-based tuning may be available by quote only. Local in-person and remote tuning are intentionally designed to save customers money. When travel is requested, the quote must account for travel time, travel expenses, schedule displacement, and the tuning appointments that cannot be completed during that time

29. What processors are supported?

The in-person service supports the same Full Service Tune processors currently listed on the Total Tuning website, including JL Audio VXi/MVi, Helix, Brax, Match, Mosconi, Audison Forza, and Arc Audio. Additional processors may be added as they are approved.

30. What if my DSP is not listed?

Contact Total Tuning before purchasing. Some processors may be added in the future, but they need to be approved for full-service support before they are offered as a standard tune.

31. Does the in-person tune include follow-up adjustments?

Yes. The service includes 30 days of included adjustments as requested by the customer, matching the normal Full Service Tune support structure.
